Ecosystem Goods and Services Assessment - Southern Alberta Phase 1 Report: Key Actors and Initiatives

In January 2007, Integrated Environments Limited and O2 planning + Design Inc (IEL-O2) were retained by Alberta Environment to assess the importance of ecosystem goods and services (EGS) in southern Alberta. The EGS assessment will provide important background information in support of developing the Southern Alberta Landscapes (SAL) regional strategy and will identify areas of further investigation and study regarding the importance of EGS in southern Alberta. The geographical scope of the assessment includes the Alberta portions of the South Saskatchewan River Basin, the Grassland Natural Region, and the Cypress Hills. The Phase 1 report summarizes the responses of more than 165 organizations and individuals thought to be addressing issues important to ecosystems in southern Alberta. In addition, phase 1 includes an annotated bibliography of information relevant to EGS and highlights areas where information is currently lacking.

Review of Alberta Environment’s Ecosystem Goods and Services Assessment- Southern Alberta Phase 2 Report

Alberta Environment (AENV) requested that Management and Solutions in Environmental Science (MSES) review and assess their Ecosystem Goods and Services Assessment Report (EGS Assessment). The peer review provides comments on the main elements of the EGS Assessment. The assessment was based on review of the stated goal of the Ecosystem Services Project, namely that the “ultimate aim is … to deliver the right information to policy developers and decision makers…”. Specifically, MSES evaluates the overall framework of the EGS Assessment, addresses the questions posed by AENV, and provides recommendations for further discussion.

Southern Alberta Landscapes: Meeting the Challenges Ahead: Input-Output Model

An input-output model is a representation of economic activities in a state or a nation. It attempts to quantify, at a point in time, the economic interdependencies that exist in the economy. In these models, all economic activities are divided into one of two types of sectors - production sectors, or final demand sectors. A producing sector is comprised of firms that produce similar goods and services using a similar technology of production. Production sectors (such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction) represent establishments in the region that produce a product or service for use either by another sector or by final demand sectors.
