This report was compiled to describe the overall sectoral characteristics and trends in economic activity in southern Alberta, to identify key drivers that may determine the future direction of the economy, and to give a general description of the types of environmental impacts that might be expected as a result of economic development in key sectors. Data included in this report were collected through a document and literature review and through interviews with social and environmental scientists, economists, industry representatives, and government officials.

This report is intended as an overview report of the current economic and demographic conditions in the southern region. An understanding of “where we are” is essential to understanding potential future conditions. This report assesses current conditions under the topics of: population numbers and distribution, employment in the region’s various economic sectors, and economic activity in the region.
One of the required background information products is an overview of literature on the theory and practice of sustainable development. An overview of the key global and continental issues and trends that have shaped sustainable development theory and practice is also required in order to put the findings in the appropriate context.

Southern Alberta is currently experiencing rapid economic growth. To help understand the cumulative effects of economic growth on the southern Alberta landscape, modelling was done to simulate change over a 50-year period using two different scenarios. This report presents the results of the modelling.
