In June 2001, Alberta Environment hosted two workshops in Red Deer, Alberta, to introduce the draft Alberta Soil and Water Quality Guidelines for Hydrocarbons at Upstream Oil and Gas Facilities, Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment Guideline for Upstream Oil and Gas Sites, and the Salt Contamination Assessment and Remediation Guidelines. Workshop participants provided written questions to the presenters to answer verbally during the sessions. For the benefit of the workshop attendees and others who are interested in the workshop material, these questions and answers have been drafted into the document Frequently Asked Questions on the Remediation and Reclamation of Soil and Groundwater. Other frequently asked questions on remediation of soil and groundwater have been included to provide readers with broader scope of information.

This glossary was originally prepared in 1994 at the request of the Reclamation Research Technical Advisory Committee (RRTAC) to provide those working in the field of reclamation in Alberta with a standardized set of definitions for reclamation terms. Use of standardized terms helps improve understanding of plans, criteria, guidelines, and research proposals and results.

Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide used for the control of annual and perennial grasses and broadleaf weeds. Registered for use in Canada in 1974, it is currently registered and used in over 125 countries. With annual sales in Alberta (1998) exceeding 2.6 million kg of active ingredient, it is by far the most commonly used pesticide in the province. Long considered by scientists and farmers around the world as an effective and environmentally friendly herbicide, recent studies have shown some persistence and mobility in the environment.

Significant economic development in the Province of Alberta has led to increased pressure for development of land adjacent to landfills. Methane gas migration from these landfills may pose a potential hazard to the occupants of these properties. At present, no guidelines exist in the Province of Alberta for the assessment and management of methane gas. In order to accommodate existing and proposed developments adjacent to active and inactive landfills, Alberta Environmental Protection (AEP) funded the development of this guidance document on the management of methane gas and its potential impacts. The terms of reference for and review of this document were developed jointly by representatives of AEP, City of Calgary Solid Waste Services and Calgary Regional Health Authority.

The principal Alberta legislation defining or affecting contaminated sites issues and actions is the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (“EPEA” or “the Act”) which lays out the powers, roles and responsibilities of Albertans and their government in the assessment and management of environmental contamination. Various provisions in EPEA provide Alberta Environment with powers to deal with site contamination. These powers include environmental protection orders for substance release and reclamation and the designation of contaminated sites. Each of these has certain restrictions imposed by EPEA, which may limit the tools’ use or application in some circumstances.
