FAQ-Water-Wastewater

Within the province, there are standards and regulations that wastewater (industrial or municipal) must meet to ensure protection of our health and environment. Alberta Environment works with other government agencies, industry, and the public in developing standards, guidelines, and policies for the protection of Alberta's watersheds.

What are the standards and guidelines concerning Industrial wastewater and where can I get more information?

Alberta Environment regulates the release of industrial wastewater to protect the environment and human health. This is mainly achieved through the issuance of Approvals and Codes of Practice that limit wastewater releases from industrial activities. Visit the Alberta Environment Industrial Wastewater website for more information.

What are the standards and guidelines concerning Municipal wastewater and where can I get more information?

Alberta Environment aims to develop consistent programs, standards and policies with municipalities and key stakeholders to ensure that storm drainage and sewage are managed to protect and improve the environment and health of Albertans. Visit the Alberta Environment Municipal Wastewater website for more information.

How do we find information on testing, courses and certification for wastewater diversion, treatment, etc.?
Alberta legislation requires that specified municipal water and wastewater and solid waste management facilities have one or more certified operators to supervise the day-to-day operation. The operating approval for each facility specifies the certified operator requirements. To find out more about wastewater certification and how you can become involved, visit the Alberta Environment Municipal Wastewater website.
