Spent shot blasting (sandblasting waste) is a waste resulting from the removal of paint from metal surfaces. This waste is identified in Table 3 of the Schedule to the Alberta User Guide of Waste Managers and should be managed as hazardous waste. Where can I dispose of sandblasting waste?Management options include recycling or final disposal at the appropriate facilities. There are specific facilities approved to receive this type of waste, and a list of these facilities is available online. Information on manifesting during transportation, classification criteria and other requirements applicable to hazardous waste are described in the Waste Control Regulation. When challenging the classification of the waste as described in the Alberta User Guide of Waste Managers, a representative sample of the waste should tested by using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure and comparing the results of the metal concentrations in the leachate with the limits indicated in Table 2 of the Guide mentioned above. |
