We use many varieties of oil in our everyday lives. Most municipal landfills are not able to accept bulk volumes of liquids for disposal because proper disposal requires specific liners, collection systems, or government approvals. However, some recycling programs for oil products do exist, for example, used automotive oil can be recycled in Alberta through a regulated province-wide program. Other types of post-consumer oil recovery and recycling are becoming more visible, such as the use of post consumer cooking oils for bio diesel or other fuel energy. Where do we take used automotive oils?Used oil, oil filters and plastic oil containers are collected and can be recycled and reprocessed into useful products. In 2006, over 83 million litres of used oil, seven million oil filters, and one million kilograms of plastic containers were recycled. For more information about the Used Oil Recycling Program or to locate a collection facility near you, visit www.usedoilrecycling.com or call 1.888.922.2298. Check with automobile service centers and stores that sell oil in your area, many will except used oil and filters for recycling. What happens to waste restaurant oil?In Alberta used cooking oils are collected by waste management companies around the province to be recycled. The used cooking oil is directed to other companies/industries where it is incorporated into other useful products. Check your local Yellowpages to find waste management companies that collect used cooking oils in your area. |
