FAQ-Waste-Construction, Renovation and Demolition Waste

Construction, Renovation & Demolition (CRD) waste makes up a significant proportion of the material disposed of in Alberta's landfills every year. In fact, the amount of waste from this one industry sector alone (27%) rivals the total amount of residential waste generated by all households in Alberta (33%).

How can we reduce Construction, Renovation and Demolition Waste?

CRD Waste consists mainly of common materials (clean wood, concrete, asphalt, metals, drywall, and cardboard) for which reuse opportunities are available and recycling markets exist. By changing the way we think about waste and making small changes in the way we manage CRD projects, we can dramatically reduce the amount of waste generated. This not only helps to conserve resources and landfill space, it often saves money at the same time. Visit Alberta Environment's Waste site for more information.

The Construction, Renovation & Demolition Waste Reduction Advisory Committee is a group of interested municipal and CRD industry stakeholders committed to taking positive action to reduce land filling of CRD waste in Alberta. Many organizations have already devoted considerable effort to addressing this issue and have demonstrated leadership in this province.

Visit Construction, Renovation & Demolition Waste Reduction Advisory Committee online to find out more about managing this waste stream.

Also visit Built Green Alberta or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to find out how to reduce the environmental impact of construction and renovation while improving energy efficiency and expanding markets for “green” products.

Finally, look for local reuse opportunities for your construction and renovation waste. Many architectural salvage companies and charities collect salvageable materials (like windows, doors, hinges, cabinetry, sinks, beams) for re-sale or re-use. Check your local Yellowpages to find a opportunities near you.
