Did you know that Edmonton now has 22 more photovoltaic solar installations than it did last year? Up until last September there were a handful of intrepid people who had installed solar panels on their homes. Then in September the City of Edmonton offered a $3 per watt subsidy for people and businesses that wanted to install solar panels. The results were immediate. By December 31 there were 17 new residential and five new commercial solar electric projects installed in Edmonton. Solar panels are pretty interesting but there are many different technologies that can be incorporated into a home to make it more efficient. Each year in Edmonton the Eco-Solar Home Tour offers a free tour that features renewable energy, energy efficiency, water efficiency, low emission technologies and natural landscaping. The Eco-Solar Home Tour is a self-directed tour of the nine homes. The owners, builders, contractors and volunteers will be on hand to describe the technologies and to show you how they work. They will answer questions on how much things cost, how things worked out and where they had problems. The best way to take the tour is to go to the web site and note down the houses you want to see. Then you can plan the most effective way to see all the things you want to see. Go to www.ecosolar.ca for more details.

This is the sixth year for this eagerly anticipated event. Each school will record daily the number of students and staff riding or walking to school. Children who cannot bike or walk to school (take a school bus) also participate by doing some form of environmentally themed work to qualify. The data is compiled by the EDRS and daily results are being reported to the schools to help build the excitement of this event. We plan on various giveaways and prizes for all schools, including a pizza party for the entire winning school. As well, every time a child walks or bikes to school or participates in an environmental activity, they can enter their name in for a chance to win a bike and helmet.

Bike Town is a community program that increases awareness about environmental issues. It provides a great opportunity to educate people about climate change and demonstrate how small changes like riding your bike to work can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and save money by reducing the need to gas up. Bike Town not only achieves environmental goals but it also promotes sustainable living - healthy lifestyle, quality of life and a sense of community. Participants are chosen based on an essay that they submit describing why they want a bike for the summer. People can submit essays for themselves or nominate others. Bike Town encourages people to discover for themselves how physical activity can improve their life and make them feel good about doing their part for the environment. Apply by May 31. For the past six years the local bike shop Freecycle Cycle has sponsored Bike Town. In 2008, a new twist was added with the purchase of the Kona Africabike.

The film journeys through inner cities, suburbs, plains and deserts dropping in on everyone from the proud home-owner to the suburbanite to the eccentric inner-city lawn rebel as they share why they do what they do with their front yard. The front yard is the site of fascinating human drama and conflict involving issues of individual rights and freedoms versus community standards and norms. After seeing “Lawn and Order” you will never look at a front yard the same way! Co-hosted with APPI.
