  • A demonstration of solar panels and a solar oven.
  • A pedal power machine.
  • A 10 minute film on anti-idling.

Please join us as Alberta becomes the first jurisdiction in North America to include milk containers in a regulated deposit-refund system. Environment Week is a fitting time to kick off the latest initiative to demonstrate Alberta’s leadership in waste reduction. The beverage container recycling program is one of Alberta’s longest running and most successful recycling programs. The addition of dairy containers will assist the Beverage Container Management Board in meeting or even exceeding its recycling rate target of 85%.

Beaver Boardwalk Guided Tour

Directions: From Hwy 16 turn south on Mountain Street by the Husky station. Follow Mountain Street up the hill and turn right onto Collinge Road at the top of the Hill. Park in the town parking lot on the north side of Collinge Road and walk down to Maxwell Lake. We will meet at the picnic table by the lake and proceed from there.

Hinton's new and exciting Beaver Boardwalk was opened June 2007 and additions in the winters of 2008 and 2009 make this one of the best places to observe beavers, birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The boardwalk leads visitors through a marsh, to a beaver pond, along Happy Creek and to the edge of Maxwell Lake. The boardwalk boasts an outdoor classroom, interpretive signage, and two viewing towers with spectacular views of the mountains. This event will be hosted by members of the Whisky-jack Club who have produced a Bird list of the Maxwell Lake and Beaver Boardwalk area. Learn first hand about the birds and wildlife in Hinton's backyard!

  1. EnviroFair/Saturday May 30 from 11am to 3pm/Elm Ave in downtown Jasper (rainout location is the Jasper Arena). This informative, fun filled outdoor fair will take place on Elm Ave in downtown Jasper. The whole family can enjoy this fair. There will be environment themed displays, activities, the 'Green Cup' street hockey tournament, recycled art show, entertainment by the Mountain WIT theatre troupe and announcement of the 2009 Bike Town winners. Tepee raising beside the Old Firehall at 11:30am with a discussion on this early example of green building.
  2. Solar hot water heater open house/Monday June 1 from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm/1134 Cabin Creek Dr. Local resident Mike Wasuita will explain and demonstrate the benefits of his newly installed solar hot water heating system.
  3. ESAC Awards/Tuesday June 2 at 1:30pm/Emergency Services Building (Jasper Emergency Services Building, 518 Geikie St.). Winners of the Jasper Environmental Stewardship Awards will be announced at the regular Council meeting. These awards recognize and celebrate leading local organizations, businesses, schools and individuals who are contributing to making Jasper a green community.
  4. Wild Wacky Walking Wednesday/Wednesday June 3 all day/Jasper schools. Jasper's schools participate in WWWW. Students find creative environmentally friendly ways to get to school in honour of Clean Air Day.
  5. Carbon Bust your Life/Wednesday June 3 at 7pm/Marmot Lodge (Marmot Lodge, 86 Connaught Dr.), Cabaret Room. Join Edmonton author and Energy Efficiency Expert, Godo Stoyke for an inspiring talk on how to slow climate change, reduce carbon emissions and save in energy costs.
  6. Stewardship Day/Thursday June 4 all day/HWY 16, 93 and Jasper Townsite. Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada staff join forces on Stewardship Day to pick up litter and recyclables along Jasper's highways and high visitor use areas.
  7. Take it or Leave it Event and Toxic-EWaste Roundup/Saturday June 6 from 11am to 3pm/Activity Centre Parking Lot (rainout location Jasper Arena 303 Pyramid Ave.). The Take it or Leave it event is like a huge community garage sale - only everything is free! Residents can bring items they no longer use (but they must still work!) and leave with items they need. It's the ultimate reuse/recycle event. Also that day is our Toxic-EWaste roundup! Special Jasper Screening of the Disney movie EARTH at the Chaba Theatre at 1:30pm and again at 3:30pm.

Bring in paints, solvents, oils, old drugs etc, and we will dispose of them safely. We will also provide information on the City's Hazmat dropoff site.

Tuesday - Solid Waste stream reduction - We will collect all of the trash from the college from the previous day and deposit it outside the front entrance in a roped off area approx 10 meters from the front doors. It will be signed showing that this is a typical College daily garbage output and what this adds up to in a year. All students and staff will be encouraged to come visit the "pile" and bring any recyclable materials along and deposit in "green" collection hoppers. Posters on "green" hoppers will encourage us to "DO MORE!". We will also provide information on what can and cannot be recycled. At the end of the day we will show how much solid waste was diverted from the landfill in just one day.

Wednesday - Commuter Challenge - Staff will be encouraged to find alternate means than driving to work this week. A vehicle counter will be placed at the entrances to the College so that we can track our traffic. We will also be setting up a voluntary "Toll Booth" for those who do drive that day. There will be a sign up sheet to see how far people walked/biked that day. Again more info available on bus routes, Green house gas emissions, etc.

Thursday - Cathy Linowski will be hosting a free lunch time seminar on Xeriscaping and low impact gardening. Guided Tours of the Campus will be available throughout the day.

Friday - Eat Locally (100 mile diet) There will be a mini-farmers market display at the college from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Rachel MacPherson from MacPherson Meats willalso make a 15-20 minute presentation on the benefits of buying local, naturally raised beef. There will also be presentations on the 100 mile diet concept. There will be a BBQ offering burgers from MacPherson Meats, locally baked buns, and fresh vegetables from local greenhouses for a toonie. A comprehensive list of Local Producers put together by the Community Food Connections group will be available.

The presentation will then head outside to the local lake where we will do some water quality sampling, look at how what we do in one area to our steam affects all other areas and finally end the day with some pond dipping.

A kick off to an ongoing campaign to encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags and baskets, to reuse plastic bags if they must use plastic and to cut down on the amount of plastic going into our local environment. On June 5 & 6 there will be prizes for those who bring their own bags, there will be information on why bringing your own bag matters and there will be a plastic bag recycling station.
