This is the first full-service construction waste recycling facility in Alberta for wood, drywall, asphalt shingles, metal and cardboard. The official opening ceremony begins at noon with City of Airdrie Mayor, Linda Bruce and Deputy Mayor of Calgary, Brian Pincott. Celebration includes a unique “ribbon cutting”, BBQ and refreshments. This is the 14th annual Stewardship Day for the Crowsnest Pass area. Annually, 200-300 people come out to help clean-up the public lands, restore trails, install bridges and much more. This reptile display and educational show gives students a chance to see reptiles up close. The presentation discusses why reptiles are important to the ecosystem and why we should not fear but instead respect them. The show will involve about eight to 10 reptile specimens. The Alberta Conservation Team will be at the Capilano Shell gas station to give motorists tips on how to reduce vehicle emissions. They will hand out fuel efficient driving cards, air fresheners reminding motorists not to idle their vehicles and a free tire gauge when tires are inflated to recommended levels.

The Avonmore Green Team has been promoting the growing of carrots as a way to talk about water conservation, reducing waste by not buying pre-packaged foods, saving money and promoting family values by gardening and then cooking together. This Green Stop will include a time for community members to bring in carrot recipes and use the carrots that have been grown in every classroom as ingredients for these recipes!
This is a free, open house tour of homes that showcase some of Edmonton’s best examples of solar energy and energy-efficiency. Hinton's new and exciting Beaver Boardwalk was opened June 2007 and new additions in the winter of 2008 make this one of the best places to observe beavers in their natural habitat. The boardwalk leads visitors through a marsh to an outdoor classroom at the edge of a beaver pond. Here beaver and muskrat can be observed. The boardwalk travels up Happy Creek through a unique riparian area and ends at an observation platform with a spectacular view of the mountains. This event will be hosted by members of the Whisky-jack Club who have produced a Bird list of the Maxwell Lake and Beaver Boardwalk area. Learn first hand about the birds and wildlife in Hinton's backyard! Directions: From Hwy 16 turn south on Mountain Street by the Husky station. Follow Mountain Street up the hill and turn right onto Collinge Road at the top of the Hill. Park in the town parking lot on the north side of Collinge Road and walk down to Maxwell Lake. We will meet at the picnic table by the lake and proceed from there.

The first annual LWSS Grade 5 Wetland Education and Watershed Awareness Day has been organized to meet specific curricular outcomes and to promote general watershed awareness and appreciation. Grade 5 students from Rich Valley and Dunstable Schools have been invited to "test drive" this new LWSS youth education initiative. The students will spend their day visiting the following four stations: 1) Groundwater and Watershed Model Demonstration and Exploration; 2)Wetland Ecology; 3) Aquatic Insects, and 4)Cows, Fish, Cattledogs and Kids Game (a game which educates children on the importance of healthy riparian areas). Alberta continues to experience rapid economic growth, particularly in the Southern part of the province. The demands of that growth on the available water supply are becoming exceedingly difficult to manage. Learn about the tools in legislation for the movement of water within basins, including the water allocation transfer process and the South Saskatchewan River Basin Management Plan. This is a regular meeting of the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs. There is a $10 charge for lunch and the meeting.

To promote clean air, bikers will meet at City Hall at 5:45pm, leaving at 6:00pm, to claim the streets of the city and bike to Henderson Lake. They will be wearing t-shirts promoting special weeks and saying "Honk if you love bikes". Following the ride, cyclists will be treated to a 100 per cent local BBQ. The Big Bow Float is Bow Riverkeeper's new film that follows the journey of three people and a dog as they paddle the entire 650 km length of the Bow River. Traveling through dramatically changing scenery over thirty days, the paddlers explore and learn about emerging pressures on the Bow, and possible solutions to ensure economic and ecological sustainability. The Big Bow Float features interviews with pre-eminent ecological experts, including Dr. David Schindler (U of A), Brian Keating (Calgary Zoo), Lorne Fitch (Cows and Fish), and Dr. Stewart Rood (U of L). They share enlightened comments reflecting the most recent science on the importance of adequate river flows for sustainable river health.
Mike Mountain Horse grade 3 students have been participating in the FiNS program for the past several years. They received 100 Rainbow Trout eggs from the Allison Creek Fish Hatchery in February. Since that time, the students have been responsible for raising the eggs to fingerling stage. It’s time for their release into an approved water body. Directions: Travel east of Lethbridge on Hwy 3, past the Tempest elevator about 2.7 km will be a Highway 512 sign South. Turn south (right off Hwy 3) follow Indian Hills Golf course signs. Respected and knowledgeable people from across southern Alberta will gather to discuss topics that relate directly to our region and the impact Green House Emissions and Climate Change will have on economic growth, post-secondary education, water availability, research and public action. There will be discussions about the current Alberta Government Climate Change Plan, implications of GHG Emissions and Climate Change on Southern Alberta, and actions for Southern Albertans to prepare for change and potentially alter our impact. Four schools from the County of Lethbridge will tour the Lethbridge Water Treatment plant. Following the tour they will give a brief overview of the activities their school participated in to facilitate changes to increase water consumption by students. The schools received grant funding to initiate change and bring awareness to issues that may have included access to safe free drinking water, decreased consumption of water by youth, increased consumption of sugary drinks by youth and increased intake of commercial bottled water (impact on environment, oral health with loss of drinking fluoridated water and cost of buying bottled water.) This EcoEnergy Conservation Seminar is part of the HAT Smart program, which educates and assists residents and utility customers in learning about initiatives that can help improve the environment and stretch their energy dollars. Wetland in Beauvais Lake Provincial Park: Students will visit and explore a wetland ecosystem in Beauvais Lake Provincial Park. Using study tools provided, students apply their knowledge of pond study techniques to observe common and not so common organisms that live in, on and around wetlands. An investigation into threats to wetland ecosystems and our SW Alberta watershed will lead to discussion on water conservation, prevention of non native plant species invasions and how protecting natural landscapes benefits everyone. The Green team at Alberta Environment Central Region office is organizing an Enviro Fair. There will be several booths from community organizations that promote environmental programs in central Alberta. The local radio station will be there to promote the event. It will be located OUTSIDE on the patio area (at the SE corner of the Provincial Building).
Students from Gailbraith School in Lethbridge will travel to Magrath to learn about Northern Leopard Frogs. Sightings of amphibians will be recorded on a data sheet and entered into a database used by biologists.

This annual Red Deer River and Piper-Waskasoo Creek Clean-up Event encourages active participation and sponsorship within the community of Red Deer, and increases awareness and understanding towards the river and its riparian area through education by building long-term stewardship of the river and its tributaries within Red Deer.
