This is a special family fun day at the farm. Come out to the farm and enjoy a day full of activities including: pond dipping; water testing; interpretative trail hike; planting trees/drought resistant shrubs; build Blue Bird boxes; play wide games; enjoy a BBQ with local foods; and home water conservation tips. After exploring the importance of water to all living things, students will visit a wetland ecosystem in Beauvais Lake Provincial Park . Using study tools provided, students will apply their knowledge of pond study techniques to observe common and not so common organisms that live in, on and around wetlands. An investigation into threats to wetland ecosystems and our southwest Alberta watershed will lead to discussion on water conservation, prevention of non native plant species invasions and how the protection of natural landscapes benefits everyone. An informative display will be set up with information/projects sponsored by groups such as Pincher Creek Watershed Group, Cows and Fish, Yellow Fish Program, the Town of Pincher Creek’s riparian work along the creek and the proposed Storm Water Retention Pond Wetland Area. The Kerry Wood Nature Centre is holding a day of festivities in honour of the late Kerry Wood, on what would have been his 100th birthday. Kerry Wood was instrumental in the formation of the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, an important migratory bird sanctuary right in the heart of Red Deer. The day starts with a pancake breakfast at 8:00 a.m., followed by the re-dedication of the original Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary gates. Interpretive walks, interactive displays and environmental activities will show you how you can carry on Kerry Wood’s legacy. It’s free fun for the whole family.
